Samuel "Sambo" Mockbee (1944-2001) began a Auburn University Rural Studio program in Alabama, America in 1991 with a serve of fellow prof D.K. Ruth. A Rural Studio was Mockbee's vehicle for educating immature designers all about a social responsibilites of architecture.

Within 1998, Mockbee was diagnosed using leukemia. When a hard & close miraculous recovery, he went in to assume awards & recognition for his function including the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant, but fell to the disease trinity years late.

Mockbee was posthumously nominated inside 2003 for the American Institute of Architects' (AIA) Gold Medal, and would keep around won that month were it non for infighting among a AIA choice committee. (a vocal minority of members wished to grant the award to Albert Kahn, who died around 1942.) There is no Gold Palm was awarded that month.
